Cyprus Passion

Nicosia might not have oceanic views but its rich history, culture and vibrant street life make it the island’s cultural heartbeat!

Nicosia is the largest city, capital and seat of government of the island. Nicosia is the only divided capital in the world since its separation became a militarized border between the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus after Turkey invaded the island of Cyprus in 1974, occupying the north of the island, including northern Nicosia. Nicosia might not be enjoying the oceanic views like the other cities on the island, but its rich history, culture and vibrant street life make it the island’s cultural heart of Cyprus.

The capital is considered to be the financial and business part of Cyprus. Nicosia hosts numerous of attractions and sites to visit, including the Cyprus Museum, Byzantine Museum, the Nicosia municipal Arts Centre but also the Venetian Walls which surround the Old City dating from 1567 and remained in place ever since. The circular defense wall was erected by the Venetian rulers to ward off Ottoman invaders.

When in Nicosia it’s a must to enjoy your coffee at Ledras street or Onasagorou Street. Ledra Street runs parallel to Onasagorou, but both streets host plenty of cozy places where you can eat traditional Cypriot food and drink your Cypriot coffee in a relaxing, warm and inviting environment. At the end of Onasagorou street, you will find the Church of Panagia Faneromeni which is the largest church within the walls of Nicosia. The pedestrian area of ‘Laiki Geitonia’ is also a must visit as it is full of taverns and souvenir shops surrounded by buildings dated from the 18th century.

Nowadays, Nicosia is considered to be the center of student life in Cyprus as some of the country’s most reputable universities including the University of Cyprus, the University of Nicosia and European University are located in this busy city. Nicosia also houses the biggest Mall known as the Mall of Cyprus, a contemporary mall offering brand-name shops, restaurants, a movie theater, kiddie rides & an arcade.
